It seems that the head of Twitter, Tesla and SpaceX doesn’t know Grinding Gear titles like the back of his hand…
Musk has previously bragged about his rankings in Diablo IV and the Hardcore League of Path of Exile 2, but this week many have begun to refute this as players streaming Path of Exile 2 and the public on the game’s subreddit have begun to investigate how much of what Musk has said is true.
Musk streamed Path of Exile 2 for an hour and a half on January 7 with his hardcore character, which is currently at level 95. In the Hardcore League, surviving higher levels is an impressive feat regardless of rank. As you progress, the game stacks enemy modifiers, damage resistance reductions, and dangerous ban modifiers, and once you die in Hardcore, your character is gone. Getting a Hardcore character to level 80 is impressive, and by level 90 you can move up the ladder. And that’s the result of brilliant gameplay and character building. But what Musk presented is the opposite.
In the first video below, at 18 minutes in, the strange characters begin when Musk clicks on a tab in his inventory called Elon’s Map. The other tabs have no such names as Elon’s Currency or Elon’s Catalysts. It’s as if someone has deliberately managed things in the background to portray Musk in a positive light. The situation is getting worse. Musk’s speed is unconvincing, his movements seem random. His damage also takes a huge dive after 10 seconds of not recharging his mana. Elsewhere, he doesn’t pick up valuable Chaos or Exalted Orbs, but he does pick up low-value Keystones that have little use in the game.
Then Musk clicks on the wrong nodes on his atlas map, as if he doesn’t know which ones to use, even though (given his character level and equipment) he has completed hundreds and hundreds of maps, if not at least a thousand. Then, wondering which maps to complete, he picks a node with four modifiers, but he calls them four things. He enters the maps with a full inventory and then tries to pick up items that way. He doesn’t have a loot filter, and he manually drags things into his inventory, suggesting that if he did, it would have taken him longer than the game itself. All this from someone who ranked 12th in Path of Exile 2?

Musk doesn’t seem to know how itemization works. At the end of the stream, he reviews his current gear. Looking at his weapon, he says that it is only level 62 compared to his level 95 character. He is apparently unaware that the effectiveness of an item in the game is not determined by its level requirement, but by the level of the item, which is a separate number, and it determines what affixes can be used to “roll” the item. He then repeated the error while hovering over each piece of equipment. He said that his gear is pretty low level for his character’s level, but it seems to work pretty well…despite the fact that it’s all high-end gear that he’s meticulously collected, crafted, and recycled to maximize his character’s build.
It’s hard to believe that this is actually his character.
