Let’s hope that Gummy Bears has little to do with the virtual character that burst into the public consciousness in 2007 (“Here’s the Gummy Bear…”).
Gummy Bears is a MOBA that was previously made under Bungie. The work was probably transferred by Sony to another PlayStation studio. Not much is known about the project, except for a few concept art images released by the studio. Before someone else got the project, the Marathon reboot was being made in parallel with this game by the studio known for Destiny (and we haven’t heard much good news about Marathon so far…).
Now, The Game Post has reported that Gummy Bears will be a team-based competitive MOBA aimed at a younger age group. As such, it will have a lighter, more vibrant art style. According to the site, it’s a lo-fi, laid-back game, which is a bit of a contradiction in terms, since competition and laid-back feel kind of sound like water and oil…
Gummy Bears is said to use a percentage-based HP system, similar to Nintendo and HAL Laboratory’s IP Super Smash Bros. Players can be knocked completely off the field, which could also be considered a gameplay element used by Super Smash Bros. So it will be interesting to see how the unnamed PlayStation team will shape the Bungie legacy in a way that makes sense, as it’s not really possible to have a MOBA and Super Smash Bros. in the same game, but they might be able to prove us wrong.
By the way, Bungie talked about Marathon last year. Joe Ziegler said that the studio wouldn’t talk about it so they could focus on the game and when they came back they would show gameplay from it. The game will be multiplatform, so it will not only come to PlayStation 5 and PC, but also to the Xbox series, and reportedly Sony will charge $40 for this game.
But it’s not official yet!
