Meta Faces Challenges: Mark Zuckerberg Plans Layoffs

TECH NEWS – Apparently it wasn’t enough that he started supporting Donald Trump, who will be inaugurated (again) on Monday, the head of Meta…

Zuck is radically changing Meta’s business strategy, and one of the key words will be to increase efficiency. Recently, the head of Meta has caused a stir by ditching the professional fact-checkers he used to have in favor of a community-driven model. For employees, 2025 is going to be a tough year, as Zuck has announced plans to lay off 5% of the company’s workforce in order to get rid of underperformers as quickly as possible.

So it’s a pretty aggressive start to the year for Zuckerberg, who announced it in an internal memo published by Bloomberg. What Zuck is trying to do is improve the performance of his employees, instead hiring new, motivated employees and making firings based on performance: “I’ve decided to raise the bar on performance management and get rid of underperformers faster. Typically, we’d let people go who weren’t meeting expectations over the course of a year, but now we’re going to make larger performance-based cuts during this cycle,” Zuckerberg said.

Meta is focused on increasing agility and moving more quickly toward its goals by improving overall employee efficiency. The company typically relies on year-end performance reviews, but is now implementing an intensive strategy that focuses even more on performance. The company currently employs approximately 72,000 people, and with the 5% reduction in headcount, the layoffs could affect approximately 3,600 employees. Affected employees will reportedly be notified of the decision by February 10.

And this is not the first time Meta has laid off a large portion of its workforce. In October, the company made a similar decision to lay off approximately 10,000 employees in 2023. Meta resorted to the layoffs after the company underwent a series of operational changes that many attribute to political motivations. Decisions like this usually have a significant impact on employee morale and can even affect employee retention.

That does not sound very optimistic…
