Spielberg Ushers in the New Action Hero: Ke Huy Quan’s Rise to Stardom

MOVIE NEWS – Ke Huy Quan laid the groundwork for his Hollywood career with Steven Spielberg’s films. As a child actor, he starred alongside Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and brought a similar charm to The Goonies. Despite these early successes, his acting opportunities dwindled, leading him to earn a film degree and work as a stunt coordinator and assistant director in Hollywood.

Quan reemerged with Crazy Rich Asians but truly skyrocketed to prominence with the critically acclaimed Everything Everywhere All At Once. His performance earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, putting him back in demand.

Although Quan was offered multiple action roles, he initially rejected the lead in Love Hurts twice, doubting his suitability for such a part. However, Spielberg ultimately persuaded him to accept, arguing the role was tailor-made for him.

Quan shared with Empire Magazine that Spielberg invited him to dinner after hearing about his struggles finding roles. During the meal, Quan mentioned his reluctance to take on Love Hurts, a story about a retired assassin forced back into action by his vengeful brother. Spielberg convinced him it was a great opportunity.

Upon revisiting the script, Quan realized it was perfect for him, offering the chance to redefine the archetype of the action hero. As he put it, “Decades of macho men dominated action films. Then came women and retirees like Liam Neeson. It’s about time nerdy, glasses-wearing guys got their shot.”
