Will Apple’s Smart Glasses Operate on a Custom Version of VisionOS?

TECH NEWS – Although the device from the Cupertino company is still years away, Apple has already begun software tests to ensure that it will be a sophisticated product in this field.

The failure of Apple’s Vision Pro may have caused the company to take its time in expanding its augmented reality (AR; also called mixed reality = MR) product portfolio, but it’s as if nothing has stopped the development of AR glasses. We’ve already written that we’ll have to wait several years for their release. There are many hurdles ahead for Apple in the execution of the product, but the company is not giving up and is trying to create a new version of the VisionOS operating system in software.

Bloomberg editor Mark Gurman reports in the Power On newsletter that work on the smart glasses continues at a secret factory in Santa Clara, California. Here they are working on combining several technologies (such as displays) to create a spiritual successor to the Apple Vision Pro. However, work is progressing more slowly than usual because there are few employees here, “thanks” to last year’s layoffs. This also suggests that Apple is not very ambitious for the show and is therefore holding back the workforce. For the time being, the company is still conducting studies on what features would benefit mass adoption, which is why there is talk of developing a custom VisionOS.

Gurman doesn’t mention whether the device will be standalone, as Apple may have something else planned before the release of the smart glasses. Gurman has previously mentioned that they are seriously considering developing a smartglass that connects to the iPhone, shifting the computing load to the phone. Right now, the biggest challenge for AR glasses is developing a chip that can deliver the same performance as a current-generation iPhone, but with a tenth of the power. Since there won’t be much room for batteries, Apple will have to find very energy-efficient components.

No wonder we have to wait two years for the launch, as we currently hear 2027…
