Obsidian Entertainment’s game may have taken a little inspiration from CD Projekt RED’s first-person adventure released four years ago.
Obsidian took to Twitter to share some details from the character sheet for its first-person RPG. Not only did we learn about the appearance options (you can have rainbow-colored hair, for example), but also the background you can give your character. There are five options: Arcane Scholar, Court Augur, Noble Scion, Vanguard Scout, War Hero. We already saw this in Cyberpunk 2077.
The description of Noble Scion was shared by Microsoft Studios on Twitter: “You were born into a noble house of great influence, moderate wealth, and questionable morals. When scandal and succession disputes brought your family down, you threw yourself on the Emperor’s mercy, and he shielded you. Crafty yet refined, you have become a formidable force at court and an invaluable ally to the Emperor.”
You hail from the Aedyran Empire but who exactly are you, Envoy? Stranger still, you have never learned which god touched your soul.

Avowed features a classless RPG system, so you can distribute your skills across the Ranger, Fighter, and Mage skill trees as you see fit. Character backgrounds serve a dual purpose. They provide a starting point for our character’s mechanical fantasy, but they will also have an impact on the story and roleplaying. We saw this in Divinity: Original Sin, which gave us starting points like Shadowblade or Wayfarer. From top to bottom on the Avowed list, the backgrounds give us Mage, Cleric, Bard, Ranger, and Fighter characters.
These names help to make everything feel weirder and more imaginative. The Court Augur, for example, can be quite devious (snake charmer, perhaps an oracle of sorts). The character creator has limited options, but the interface is very similar to what we saw in Pillars of Eternity: Deadfire. That is also an Obsidian game, and Avowed continues the events as a kind of sequel and spin-off.
Avowed will be released on February 18th for the Xbox Series and PC. It will also be available on Xbox Game Pass.
