Xbox boss Phil Spencer may have hinted that the Bethesda Game Studios (BGS) game won’t be exclusive to Microsoft consoles and PCs forever.
Destin Legarie asked Spencer if he could confirm that Starfield would remain an Xbox exclusive. The PlayStation 5 port of Todd Howard’s game (which was originally in development until Microsoft bought out Bethesda’s parent company ZeniMax Media!) has been rumored for about a year now, and more than once since Xbox announced in February that it was considering a multiplatform future. At the same time, Microsoft confirmed that Hi-Fi Rush or Sea of Thieves, for example, would be coming to Sony or Nintendo hardware.
“No, there’s no specific game [that remains an exclusive]… there’s no reason for me to put a ring fence around any game and say, ‘This game is not going to go to a place where it’s going to find players and be a business success for us.’ What we find is that we’re able to run a better business that allows us to invest in a great lineup of games like you’ve seen, that’s our strategy. Our strategy is to make our games available. Xbox Game Pass is an important part of getting the games on our platform,” Spencer said.
In November, Spencer said that there is no red line for games, so there is no stipulation that a particular game can’t make it to, say, the Nintendo Switch 2 (DOOM: The Dark Ages could show up here, we wrote about that) or the PlayStation 5. There have also been rumors (which we’ve reported on) that Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 or Halo: The Master Chief Collection could become multiplatform in the future.
Although we don’t have any specifics, in May, Rare’s Sea of Thieves, which was previously an Xbox exclusive, became the most downloaded PlayStation 5 game in both the US and Europe.
