DeepSeek: The Chinese AI Faces Its First Ban!

TECH NEWS – DeepSeek, which has been hitting Nvidia in the gut on the US stock market this week, has gotten its first ban in a short time!

In a somewhat aggressive but understandable move, the US Navy has banned the use of DeepSeek on its ships. This was reported by CNBC and confirmed by a Navy spokesperson. The Navy issued the order to sailors and soldiers via an internal email. (The Chinese origin of the DeepSeek is evidenced by the fact that it claims that Tibet and Taiwan are part of China).

The security implications of models like DeepSeek could be similar, if not worse. In the case of the military, members may ask the chatbot for help with their daily tasks or daily lives. These requests, if accessed by malicious entities, could compromise national security. The Navy’s email noted that a complete ban on work-related tasks and personal use was ordered due to potential security and ethical concerns about the model’s origin and use. They asked everyone to refrain from downloading, installing, or using the DeepSeek model in any way.

According to CNBC, the email was sent on Friday, just before Monday’s big stock market sell-off that shocked investors and tech executives alike. The site adds that the message was sent via the Navy’s Naval Air Warcraft Center Division Cyber Workforce Manager and an operational distribution list that covers most (if not all) members of the branch. A Navy spokesman confirmed the email, adding that it followed Navy MI policy. White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt previously confirmed that the National Security Council was looking into the national security implications of DeepSeek. Her comments came after President Trump struck an optimistic tone, saying that DeepSeek should be a wake-up call for US companies.

It is a tough but understandable move.
