MOVIE NEWS – The hero of the action comedy Novocain (Jack Quaid) does not feel any pain, which makes him especially suited to deal with the villains who capture his girlfriend (Amber Midthunder). (Novocaine is a powerful painkiller, a close relative of lidocaine. – ed.)
The 32-year-old actor, best known for his role on The Boys—the son of Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid—enjoyed learning moves he didn’t know existed as an action hero, but he couldn’t be happier that his character is suffering from a serious, life-threatening illness.
“Our hero has a very rare genetic condition called CIPA (complex sensory and autonomic neuropathy), which simply means that the nervous system doesn’t transmit any information about pain due to a congenital disorder,” Quaid explained to The Hollywood Reporter. “It sounds wonderful at first, because nothing hurts, but most patients don’t live past 25 years old. For example, they can only eat through a straw because they wouldn’t notice that their tongues were bitten off. My character is protected from this because he lives in a special bubble and looks after his loved ones from there. The funny thing was that my character was hit in the head a thousand times, but I couldn’t even flinch, because he doesn’t fe1el pain. This constant wooden face was the biggest challenge of the role.”
(Novocaine – domestic premiere: March 27, 2025.)
