Diablo 4 vs. Path of Exile 2: Which Action RPG Is Winning Over Players?

Right now, Diablo 4 is “a blessing if you’re coming from Path of Exile 2,” claim fans switching from one action RPG to another. POE2 can feel overwhelmingly complex or time-consuming to fully enjoy. However, its quality remains virtually unquestionable.

For over a decade, action RPG fans have been split between two genre giants: Diablo and Path of Exile. Previously, the debate centered around Diablo 3 vs. POE1, but today, it’s Diablo 4 and POE2 that are battling for players’ attention. Grinding Gear Games’ latest entry made waves when it arrived on Steam Early Access on December 6, attracting countless curious players—many of them coming straight from Blizzard’s game.

Over on the r/diablo4 subreddit, one user who transitioned from the fantastic Path of Exile 2 shared an insightful take: “The loot and progression this season is a blessing if you’re coming from POE2,” writes nike121. “Lately, my girlfriend and I have been making time to really sit down and play […] The loot (chef’s kiss) has been so good that I keep tweaking my character, experimenting, and feeling like an absolute beast while tearing through content. It’s ridiculously addictive.”

“I even bought the new DLC (Vessel of Hatred), and honestly? The story had me hooked […] But compared to my experience in POE2, things felt different. Don’t get me wrong—I loved a lot about it, especially the boss fights, which were phenomenal. But I lost motivation when I kept hitting roadblocks, or constantly had to swap out gear. I spent more time managing resistances and buying/selling items than actually playing the game. It started to feel like a chore, and I already have one of those.”

Clearly, the comment comes from someone with a busy schedule: “D4 […] respects my time. Thank you, devs, for this season—for creating a game that makes me feel like a true demon slayer, even if I can only dedicate a few hours to it.” At the time of writing, the thread had gathered over 800 comments from fellow Diablo 4 players, many of whom have very different perspectives on nike121’s experience.

Two Games, Two Different Experiences

Many players agree with the post’s author, praising the Season of Sorcery. Others, however, argue that Path of Exile 2‘s demanding nature isn’t necessarily a drawback. Reddit user dorobica countered: “I don’t get why people associate easy gameplay or handouts with ‘respecting their time.’ I have very little free time, and I absolutely love POE2. I’m only level 78 since launch, barely playing much, but the game is incredible, and I think it respects my time perfectly well.”

Ultimately, Diablo 4 and Path of Exile 2 offer two distinct action RPG experiences, despite sharing similar aesthetics and gameplay mechanics. Blizzard opts for a more streamlined, accessible approach, while Grinding Gear Games caters to hardcore enthusiasts. Fortunately, both games are polished, well-crafted experiences, ensuring that players can choose the one that suits them best—or enjoy both simultaneously. But rather than being a matter of “respecting time,” it all comes down to investing it in whatever feels most rewarding.
