Magic, Mayhem, and Gangsters – A New Fantasy RPG Emerges

Guns, spells, and chaos collide in a gangster-infused fantasy action RPG just announced. The Directorate: Novitiate takes players to a supernatural version of Los Angeles, where dark secrets lurk beneath the surface. Developed by Nesting Games, the title promises a gripping narrative.

Do you remember Bright? That Will Smith movie imagined an alternate present filled with fantasy creatures while channeling the buddy-cop energy of Lethal Weapon. That same vibe resurfaces with The Directorate: Novitiate, a third-person action RPG blending urban crime with supernatural threats.

Unveiled just minutes ago, the game casts players as Mercury, a formidable “magical gangster” who must battle occult horrors while unearthing hidden dangers. Alongside these encounters, he follows the trail of a serial killer in a narrative packed with tough choices and sinister conspiracies—all set in the fantasy-infused version of 2006 Los Angeles.

Guns, Magic, and High-Flying Combat

From a gameplay perspective, The Directorate: Novitiate fuses spellcasting, gunplay, and RPG mechanics. “Enhance your abilities and take down enemies using weapon katas—acrobatic combat maneuvers that turn you into an action hero,” explain the developers, promising a well-designed progression system.

It’s still too early to draw definitive comparisons, but some are already likening the game to Remedy Entertainment’s Control—though with an even deeper supernatural flair. What’s certain is that the game is slated for release later this year on PC via early access, with Nesting Games—founded in 2001—leading development.

Owned by Digital Bros Studio, the team comprises industry veterans, including former developers from Capcom, Warner Bros. Games Montreal, and Ubisoft. As showcased in the debut trailer, their ambition is to craft a high-quality, single-player experience.
