PlayStation Network: Is Sony Shifting Focus to PC Gaming?

Perhaps Sony has finally realized that it shouldn’t force something that not everyone might think is necessary, especially when the forced addition isn’t really necessary!

Sony has announced on the PlayStation Blog that it’s making some changes to the PC port of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 as it nears release (we’ll be covering the game’s PC specs in a separate news item later today). Last year, it was common news that when a PC port of a Sony game was released, you had to sign up for PlayStation Network and link your account to Steam or the Epic Games Store (this was also done retroactively for Helldivers 2).

Except Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 doesn’t make PSN accounts MANDATORY! They will do the same with The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, and retroactively, God of War: Ragnarok and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered will also get rid of the mandatory PSN tether. The account will be useful enough to collect trophies and manage your friends list on Sony’s platform. Except that they’re also going to be on Steam, and so Sony is trying to screw with gamers in a different way.

In Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, you unlock the Spider-Man 2099 Black Suit and the Miles Morales 2099 Suit early. In God of War Ragnarok, you will gain access to the Black Bear Armor Set for Kratos in the first Lost Items Chest in the Realm Between Realms (previously only accessible with a New Game+ run), as well as a Resource Bundle (500 Hacksilver and 250 XP). In The Last of Us Part II Remastered, you will receive 50 additional points to activate bonus features and unlock extras, as well as Jordan’s Jacket from Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet as a skin for Ellie. In Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, you will gain access to Nora Valiant’s outfit.

Well, Sony had the idea: Not everyone wants to install another account and another launcher on their computer. There are already a dozen of them, and at least it makes everything a LOT easier.
