Trouble Brewing in Warner's Games Division: What You Need to Know

Bloomberg editor Jason Schreier has revealed more details about the current state of Warner Bros. Discovery’s (WBD) games division.

The situation at Monolith Productions is not very hopeful. The studio known for games like Shogo, No One Lives Forever, The Matrix Online, F.E.A.R., Condemned and Middle-Earth: Shadow, announced their new project at The Game Awards 2021. Three years have passed since then, and the game in question is still far from being released, as Wonder Woman is still far from being finished, and we haven’t seen anything except the teaser shown at The Game Awards.

All we’ve heard so far is that it will be an origin story in which the studio will use the nemesis system seen in Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor and Middle-Earth: Shadow of War. According to Schreier’s sources, Wonder Woman’s development has been chaotic to say the least, and as a result, it’s being rebooted under a new director in early 2024. WBD has reportedly already spent over $100 million on the project, which is understandable considering it’s been nearly eight years since the release of Middle-Earth: Shadow of War. Either Wonder Woman will take several years to come out, or it will be canceled in time.

WBD was still going strong when Hogwarts Legacy was released, but since then the games division has been hit twice: first with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League failed, and now MultiVersus has been announced for cancellation. Rocksteady was also mentioned by Schreier, with the studio returning to what made it successful after the Suicide Squad flop. The studio will once again work on single player Batman games, but it will be several years before we see the results.

The two games that were deemed failures led to the departure of Warner Bros. Games CEO David Haddad, and now WBD doesn’t really have a game to release. After Gotham Knights, Warner Bros. Montreal is reportedly helping with Wonder Woman development, but they also have a concept for a Game of Thrones game. WBD has already rejected a Gotham Knights 1.5, a John Constantine game and a Flash game as pitchesfrom this studio.
