The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall Unity GOG Cut: Forced to Leave GOG!

CD Projekt could not find a suitable solution for the release of The Elder Scrolls Part II, which was ported to the Unity engine.

For now, the GOG Cut version of Daggerfall Unity is still available on GOG by clicking here, and you can download it for free (but hurry, it will only be part of the offer until 15:00 CET!) This is the GOG-supported version of the second part of the franchise, loaded with a few mods to give you a proper gaming experience for today. The only problem is that this version is outdated compared to the base version of Daggerfall Unity. The mods are not the latest versions, and some of the mods don’t seem to work well together, to say the least.

On the GOG forums, site spokesman king_kunat wrote that Daggerfall GOG Cut is being removed because the package is outdated and no longer serves its intended purpose of providing a trouble-free modded experience for the game. If we add the game to our GOG library, we will still have access to it after it is removed, and it will not return to CD Projekt’s platform until they develop a solution for publishing and maintaining projects like this in better condition. So there is hope for a return…

This is a real problem for older games, by the way. If something was easy to run on Windows XP/Vista/7 10-15 years ago, there’s no guarantee it’ll be easy to run on Windows 10 or Windows 11 today (there are plenty of examples!). That’s why GOG started its Game Preservation Program (we’ve written about it before), to offer customers older games that they maintain themselves in a playable state. You could run a virtual PC on your PC, but that would be system-intensive and cumbersome. This is what the Poles want to make easier for us.

So it’s worth grabbing the Daggerfall GOG Cut on GOG before it’s no longer available. At least you’ll have it until it comes back.
