“We’ll take the risk.” That’s what Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has to say about the company’s approach to Switch 2 production. He emphasizes that Nintendo will estimate demand based on upcoming console showcases, with a strategy to “keep moving forward with production to meet the highest possible demand”, a plan they will implement following April’s event and beyond.
Every time a new generation of gaming consoles is released, fears arise that scalpers and resellers will swoop in to make stock nearly impossible to find. This was the case with the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S back in 2020 when securing a console at launch was a nightmare for many gamers. Will Nintendo be able to keep up with demand and prevent the Switch 2 from becoming the latest victim of price-gouging resellers? According to Furukawa, the company plans to evaluate demand based on how players respond to upcoming events.
In a recent Q&A session with shareholders following the company’s latest financial report, Furukawa revealed that Nintendo will “take risks” with Switch 2 production and estimate demand based on audience reactions to upcoming showcases. He specifically referenced the April 2 Nintendo Direct and the Nintendo Switch 2 Experience demo stations, where players worldwide—including in Hungary—will get their hands on the new console.
“From now on, we’ll take the risk and proceed with production to meet as much demand as possible. We intend to estimate initial and ongoing demand based on responses to the Nintendo Direct airing on April 2, as well as the feedback from consumers who experience the product firsthand at the Nintendo Switch 2 Experience events.”
Nintendo Aims to Keep Scalpers at Bay
A major concern is whether Nintendo will be able to prevent scalpers from hoarding stock and ensure that the Switch 2 reaches actual players. The coming months will be crucial in determining how well they manage distribution, but the company appears committed to fighting back against resellers. One possible solution? Producing as many consoles as possible to ensure players can find them at retailers without issue.
