“It was a bit of a shock,” says Ted Price, founder of Insomniac Games, adding that the studio’s most stressful period was moving away from Sony and adjusting to working with other partners.
Insomniac Games has solidified itself as one of the most influential and successful studios in the gaming industry. Over the past seven years, they have released four major games—three within the Spider-Man universe and another in the Ratchet & Clank series—and are currently hard at work on Marvel’s Wolverine. However, behind this success lies a period of uncertainty and stress that reshaped the studio’s future.
In case you don’t recall, Sony officially acquired Insomniac Games in August 2019, nearly a year after the launch of Marvel’s Spider-Man. But the two had collaborated long before that on Ratchet & Clank and Resistance. However, in 2010, Insomniac’s leadership made the bold decision to step away from Sony and explore new opportunities. That decision led to one of the most difficult periods for the team, as they had to adapt to working with other publishers and navigate the challenges of their newfound independence.
Speaking on the Kinda Funny Games podcast, Insomniac Games founder Ted Price shared what it was like to transition away from Sony in 2010, which forced them to work with companies like EA and Microsoft. “I think the most stressful period was when we stopped working with Sony and had to get used to collaborating with other partners that had completely different approaches from ours,” he explained (via MP1ST).
“We had become so in sync with Sony—the way we worked, our creative philosophies—it was a bit of a shock. We had to adjust to the different ways publishers operated, which can be distracting when you’re focused on getting games out the door. Developer-publisher relationships need time to develop and reach a point where both parties feel comfortable.”
“During that time, when we weren’t working as closely with Sony, we didn’t give ourselves enough time to establish strong ties with other publishers before returning to Sony. But looking back, we always knew what we were looking for, and we knew that the best and most compatible partner for us had always been Sony.” During this time, Insomniac collaborated with EA to develop the co-op shooter Fuse, then released the Xbox-exclusive Sunset Overdrive in 2014, later experimenting with VR projects and launching a few smaller games.
