The French publisher has confirmed the rumors that Rainbow Six Siege will receive a major update and a complete showcase.
Rainbow Six Siege X will get a major audiovisual upgrade from the 2015 original (hence the X in the title, which stands for 10 in the Roman numeral system), much more tactical gameplay than before, and Ubisoft promises a new way to play the Rainbow Six live service game, which we’ll find out more about on March 13 at 19:00 CET when we get a more in-depth demo. Until then, here’s a short teaser video (see the first video below).
Meanwhile, the first season of Rainbow Six Siege’s 10th year (Operation Prep Phase) will see a new character, Rauora from New Zealand, join the Attackers. She will be available immediately to Battle Pass owners and two weeks later with Renown and R6 credits. Her primary weapons are the 417 sniper rifle and the M249 light machine gun, while her secondary weapons are the GSH-18 9mm pistol and the new Reaper MK2 machine rifle (the latter with red sights and a larger magazine). She can also use smoke grenades and breaching charges.
A gadget called the Deployable Omnilink Mesh (D.O.M.) Launcher is also a big innovation for them. It’s a bulletproof smart cover system that only works in doorways. When you aim at a doorway, an on-screen icon tells you if you have a valid target and you can fire the gadget. Once the projectile hits the doorway, it connects and deploys a bulletproof panel that extends all the way to the floor. This is unusual in the game, as there’s usually room for drones under barricades, but this smart barricade detects when a drone is nearby; it then raises the barricade slightly to allow the drone to pass through before it closes completely. With the bulletproof barricade, you can block the enemy’s line of sight and movement, and use the drone from a distance in relative safety. Should Rauora’s companions walk through the door, a rectangular trigger will appear at the top of the panel on either side of the door. These will remain closed until a character approaches, at which point they will unlock and open. If someone pulls the trigger, the panel door will open. If the door is open and the trigger is pulled, it will close.
Attackers and defenders can interact with the panel to open or close the barrier, but the attacking team has some advantages. When the panel is first set up/closed, the trigger briefly locks out defenders and opens only for attackers. The door moves much faster when used by an attacker. This allows attackers to dictate the pace around the panels. This allows Rauora to control the flow of the battle. With Ying or Fuze, she can mount a serious attack. However, the panels are not explosive, and the Oryx will destroy them. They will also not work properly under Tubarão’s Zoto canister. Hunter’s ADS can also stop them.
Operation Prep Phase will be available for testing next week, with a release in March.
