“The PS5 Generation Was Slowed Down” – Former PlayStation Boss Predicts When the PS6 Will Launch

Former Sony executive Shuhei Yoshida believes 2027 is too soon for the next PlayStation due to semiconductor shortages. “I’d be fine with the success of PS5.” The ex-PlayStation chief suggests the PS6 could launch in 2028.

In the gaming industry, the length of console generations has always been a hot topic, and even today, discussions continue on how long it should take for a new platform to launch. In PlayStation’s case, it seems evident that fans will need to wait several more years, though the exact timeframe remains uncertain. Some argue that this generation hasn’t even truly begun yet, as the PS4 is still supported and millions of players are actively using it daily.

While there is no official news, Sony’s engineering team has been working on the next console for years. The company’s CEO previously stated that the PS6 launch would not be delayed despite the success of the PS5. Speaking to VentureBeat, Shuhei Yoshida, a key figure in PlayStation history, shared his thoughts on the length of generational cycles.

Extended Console Cycles

The former head of PlayStation’s indie division believes that generational cycles have significantly extended in recent years. That’s why it wouldn’t be surprising if the PlayStation 6 launched in 2028. “The cycles are getting longer and longer. The last one was seven years. If it’s seven years again, we might see a new console in 2027. I have no inside information on the next PlayStation, but that seems too soon,” he stated (via Gameranx).

“The PS5 generation was slowed down due to semiconductor issues. If the next PlayStation arrives in 2028, that sounds about right to me. Microsoft has leaked a plan for 2028. Maybe both will launch around the same time,” Yoshida added. No official details have been disclosed yet, but reports from Reuters suggest that backwards compatibility will be a priority for the PS6, which is why Sony has opted for AMD once again.
