MOVIE NEWS – The most legendary warrior in the Dune universe might be making a comeback. That’s right: Jason Momoa is reportedly set to reprise his role as Duncan Idaho in Denis Villeneuve’s third Dune film, titled Dune: Messiah.
This revelation is monumental for both fans of the movies and Frank Herbert’s novels, as it suggests that one of the most mind-blowing character arcs from the books is making its way to the big screen. Even more surprising? Momoa wasn’t even in the last film.
How Is Duncan Idaho Still Alive?
If you’ve seen Dune: Part Two, you probably remember that Duncan Idaho wasn’t in it—because he died, quite heroically, in the first film while saving Paul Atreides. If you’re unfamiliar with the books, you might be wondering: how can someone return after dying? The answer lies in the concept of gholas.
In the novels, Duncan Idaho is resurrected as a ghola—a genetically engineered clone created from a deceased individual’s genetic material. Gholas typically don’t retain their past life memories (at least not at first), but they look identical to their originals and are often produced to help people cope with loss. However, Duncan Idaho is no ordinary ghola.
Created by the Bene Tleilax, he is given the name Hayt and trained as both a Mentat and a Zensunni philosopher. While he remains fiercely loyal to House Atreides, there’s a catch: Hayt has been programmed—against his will—to kill Paul Atreides. This conflict torments him, but as he regains his past-life memories, he becomes the first ghola ever to do so.
What This Means for Momoa’s Future in ‘Dune’
If these reports are accurate, this could be a major game-changer—not just for Dune, but also for Jason Momoa and his role in the growing Dune-iverse. Duncan Idaho’s story extends far beyond the timeline of Paul Atreides and Chani, making him one of the most enduring characters in the franchise.
With Villeneuve’s third Dune film shaping up to be his final installment, fans are eager to see how this arc will play out. If Warner Bros. truly intends to continue expanding the Dune-iverse, Momoa’s return could be just the beginning.
