MOVIE NEWS – The release date for Spider-Man 4 has been pushed back. However, the delay is minor, meaning that superhero fans only need to wait one extra week before Tom Holland swings back onto the big screen as Peter Parker. The follow-up to 2021’s box office smash Spider-Man: No Way Home was initially set to release on July 24, 2026, but according to Variety, it has now been rescheduled for July 31.
This shift means that Sony and Marvel’s upcoming blockbuster will avoid clashing with a major competitor in the summer movie season. It’s not an unexpected move, especially for those familiar with the industry, as the studio likely wanted to avoid a direct showdown with Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated epic The Odyssey, which is set to hit theaters on July 17, 2026.
Why the Delay Might Be a Smart Move
Pushing back the release of Spider-Man 4 by just a week gives the film some breathing room and a two-week cushion between it and Nolan’s latest project. The Odyssey boasts a star-studded cast and will undoubtedly draw massive audiences. With this delay, Spider-Man 4 will also have access to more IMAX screens, since The Odyssey will dominate premium formats upon release. The only downside? It removes the potential for another “Barbenheimer”-style cultural event.
Spider-Man Always Breaks Box Office Records
Spider-Man: No Way Home raked in an astonishing $1.92 billion globally during its 2021–2022 theatrical run (The Numbers reports), securing its place as one of the most beloved and highest-grossing films in the MCU since Avengers: Endgame. Holland’s latest Spidey adventure remains the most successful live-action Spider-Man film ever made.
It’s also worth noting that the last two live-action Spider-Man films both crossed the billion-dollar mark at the box office. In 2019, Holland took on Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) in Spider-Man: Far From Home, following the tragic death of Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) in Endgame. The web-slinging hero has always been a major draw for Marvel, with every big-screen iteration—whether it be Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, or Tom Holland—effortlessly surpassing the half-billion-dollar milestone.
Here’s how all the live-action Spider-Man films performed at the global box office:
- Spider-Man (2002): $822.7 million
- Spider-Man 2 (2004): $795.9 million
- Spider-Man 3 (2007): $896 million
- The Amazing Spider-Man (2012): $758.6 million
- The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014): $709.7 million
- Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017): $878.9 million
- Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019): $1.13 billion
- Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021): $1.92 billion
Adjusted for inflation, Sam Raimi’s entire Spider-Man trilogy, Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man, and Jon Watts’ Spider-Man: Homecoming would all surpass the billion-dollar mark today. Let’s also not forget Sony’s wildly successful animated adaptations—Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse earned $374.6 million, while its sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, brought in $681.1 million worldwide.
Despite the minor delay, there’s no doubt that Spider-Man 4 will continue the franchise’s tradition of dominating the box office. Plus, it certainly doesn’t hurt that the next Spidey film will debut just two months after Avengers: Doomsday in the same summer.
