Demon’s Souls: FromSoftware Expressed Disappointment in Sony’s Handling

The Japanese studio was hoping for better treatment for Demon’s Souls, and for good reason, as the game was originally released for PS3.

Demon’s Souls was only available on PlayStation 3, and the remake was one of the PlayStation 5’s launch titles. Shuhei Yoshida, Sony’s former first-party and then indie head, spoke about the game in more detail. Since the relationship between FromSoftware and Sony doesn’t seem to be that bad, it’s interesting to see how rocky the beginning was between the two parties.

FromSoftware has had several games become huge hits (Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Elden Ring are notable, along with the PlayStation 4 exclusive Bloodborne), but they seem hesitant to work with Sony. Yoshida revealed that although Sony wanted to work with the Japanese studio on a sequel to Demon’s Souls, it didn’t materialize because Bandai Namco ended up publishing Dark Souls, as Sony didn’t care enough for From Software’s work.

Sony Computer Entertainment was only the publisher of Demon’s Souls in Japan, as Atlus was the publisher in North America and Bandai Namco in Europe, due to the reception of the game during playtests with Sony. Yoshida recalled that he spent several hours with Demon’s Souls and still found himself at the beginning of the game, which made him feel that the game was “incredibly bad”. However, he regretted his own and Sony’s earlier decisions and expressed his gratitude to the game’s Western publishers.

Yoshida noted that he and the rest of Sony have “tremendous respect” for From Software. They believe that Hidetaka Miyazaki’s best game was Bloodborne. Hearing such information, however, left many players wondering why there was no further collaboration after that. Despite the closure of Japan Studio, Sony still owns the rights to Bloodborne, but Sony doesn’t seem to want anything to do with the IP.

Perhaps the company will change its mind.
