James Gunn, CEO of DC Studios, believes that a Marvel Rivals-style hero shooter featuring Batman and Superman is an “absolute possibility.” However, fans should temper their expectations. The filmmaker has confirmed discussions with two major studios about developing new DC video games.
The future of the Batman and Superman multiverse is shaping up to be exciting across films, TV series, and animated projects. But what about video games? After the back-to-back failures of Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, fans are left wondering what’s next for the franchise. More importantly, is DC planning to launch its own version of Marvel Rivals?
James Gunn addressed numerous questions about DC’s gaming future during a recent press event attended by several major media outlets. One journalist asked the executive whether he could see a hero shooter starring Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and other DC legends. His response? “It’s 100% possible.” However, according to ComicBook, there’s no actual project in development yet, so fans shouldn’t expect any announcements soon.
NetherRealm and Rocksteady Are in Talks with DC Studios
Gunn also revealed that he has had meetings with NetherRealm Studios and Rocksteady Studios to discuss the potential for new DC-based video games. “We sat down with them to talk about the characters and stories that interest both us and them,” explained the Guardians of the Galaxy director. This statement reaffirms that the developers of Mortal Kombat are still considering a return to the DC universe after Injustice 2.
Just days ago, reports surfaced that Rocksteady Studios is now shifting focus back to single-player Batman games. Meanwhile, we already know that Monolith Productions is deep into development on its Wonder Woman project, while WB Games Montreal is working on another unannounced superhero title. Hopefully, these projects will be officially revealed in the near future.
As for DC’s potential answer to Marvel Rivals, its success is anything but guaranteed. Warner Bros. recently faced disappointment with MultiVersus, its attempt at a Super Smash Bros.-style fighter featuring Batman, Superman, and other iconic characters. Despite early enthusiasm, the game failed to maintain momentum and ultimately flopped.
