TECH NEWS – The “greens” will certainly not be happy to recall this, because it confirms that the error is thus in the Blackwell silicon…
We’ve also reported over the past few days that Nvidia’s latest GeForce graphics cards may all be incomplete, so the RTX 5090, RTX 5080 and RTX 5070 Ti may all have less than the factory confirmed ROP amount in their graphics cards, which would put their performance below the officially stated level. We’ve seen the shortfall in all models of the new architecture released so far, but so far the company has only said that the 5090/5070 Ti pair is affected… but now The Verge has a quick announcement: the early production RTX 5080 is struggling with the same issue, and affected customers are eligible for a replacement.
Interestingly, the problem seems to be limited for now, but it’s important to note that average consumers using Nvidia’s RTX 5000 GPUs won’t really notice the missing ROPs issue unless they test their graphics card with dedicated programs (e.g. GPU-Z), as the percentage performance drop is in the single digits for now. So Blackwell is dealing with silicon degradation, so after a while we may see more SKUs with missing ROPs, or something more significant, depending on what the real problem is with Nvidia’s manufacturing processes.
Nvidia did take the liberty of noting that the upcoming RTX 5070 will no longer suffer from this issue, so either they have found the problem, or at least some sort of workaround has been found. However, so far Nvidia has been silent on the RTX 5080, so we’ll have to believe that when the RTX 5070 is released and we don’t hear about it like we did with the other three Blackwell cards that have already been released.
For those experiencing the missing ROP issue, Nvidia will honor replacement requests, but given the current supply chain situation, replacement may take longer and depends on how the company prioritizes RMA requests.
