MOVIE NEWS – “We will not sell the rights… and especially not to you” – one director who applied for the Warcraft movie received a brutal rejection. Uwe Boll is far from the best filmmaker, and Blizzard wanted nothing to do with him for their World of Warcraft adaptation.
Although Legendary and Blizzard announced the Warcraft movie in 2006, it took nearly a decade to be released. Fans were not entirely won over, and it only survived commercially thanks to a massive box office success in China. However, time heals all wounds, and today, Warcraft is considered a respectable fantasy film with some fascinating behind-the-scenes stories.
The film’s production was, as expected, a turbulent journey. Originally, Sam Raimi (of Spider-Man fame) was set to direct, but the role eventually fell to Duncan Jones, the son of David Bowie. Jones not only took over directing duties but also rewrote the script while dealing with his wife’s health struggles and the passing of his father. On top of that, he had to compete with major box office contenders such as Captain America: Civil War and Batman v Superman that same year.
Uwe Boll Tried to Direct Warcraft: The Movie
What many might not know is that there was a director who desperately wanted to take on the Warcraft movie from the moment it was announced. The infamous Uwe Boll even reached out to Blizzard directly, pitching himself for the director’s chair. He personally confirmed this in a 2008 interview. Blizzard’s response was absolutely priceless:
“I contacted Paul Sams at Blizzard, and he told me, ‘We’re not selling the movie rights… and especially not to you. Since this is such a massively successful online game, a bad movie could destroy its ongoing revenue and the enormous value it brings to the company.’” – Uwe Boll told MTV News.
It’s no surprise that Blizzard wanted nothing to do with him. Boll is notorious for his subpar video game adaptations, including Alone in the Dark (2005), Postal (2007), and Far Cry (2008). Warcraft: The Beginning is now available on Prime Video, Movistar+, and SkyShowtime.
