A Cancelled Masterpiece? Wonder Woman Open-World Game Was Set to Be Huge, Says DC Writer

The closure of Monolith Productions and the cancellation of the long-awaited Wonder Woman game have left fans reeling, especially those who consider Diana of Themyscira one of their favorite comic book characters. DC Comics writer Gail Simone expressed her regret over the disappointing news.

Although there were signs that the project was in trouble, the sudden shutdown of Monolith Productions and the cancellation of its in-development Wonder Woman game hit fans hard. For many, including Gail Simone, who has penned numerous DC Comics stories featuring the Amazonian warrior, this was a crushing blow.

“An Epic Masterpiece”

Taking to Twitter, the renowned comic writer revealed that the open-world action-adventure game held tremendous promise: “It was a big, sisterly game. It was beautiful to look at. I’m not going to give details for a number of reasons, but everything possible was done to make this not only a great game, but a great Wonder Woman game. An epic masterpiece.”

“Everyone who worked on it gave their all. (…) I know there will be a lot of accusations, but everyone who worked on its development wanted to make this the best game in history. But sometimes that’s not enough,” she added, emphasizing that the developers poured their passion and respect for the character into the project. While the game has officially been shelved, there’s always a chance that gameplay footage may leak in the future.

Gail Simone, known for her work on Birds of Prey and Batgirl, remains a highly respected voice on DC Comics’ female superheroes. However, this Wonder Woman game will never see the light of day, leaving fans to wonder what could have been—an ambitious open-world action-adventure from the creators of Shadow of Mordor, delivering both excitement and fidelity to the heroine.

As for the future of DC video games, James Gunn is reportedly collaborating with NetherRealm Studios and Rocksteady Studios on a new Batman title, but the closure of Monolith Productions—alongside the failures of Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League and Gotham Knights—leaves the franchise in an uncertain state. Meanwhile, Marvel continues to dominate the scene with Spider-Man 2 and Marvel Rivals. Perhaps it’s time for DC to consider working with external studios?
