Deckard: Is Valve’s Hardware’s Release Coming Sooner Than Expected?

TECH NEWS – Gabe Newell’s company not only wants to be on the market with the Steam Deck hardware, but also with a new VR headset!

According to a new rumor, Valve’s headset, the Deckard, will be available as early as the end of the year (presumably again via Steam), but the price might be surprising, as the rumor has it that the company will charge $1,200 for it. The rumor was started on Twitter by a Valve specialist, Gabe Follower:

“Several people have confirmed that Valve is planning to release a new standalone wireless VR headset (codenamed Deckard) by the end of 2025. The current price for the full bundle is said to be $1200. Including some “in-house” games (or demos) that are already done. Valve wants to give the user the best possible experience without cutting any costs. Even at the current price, it will be sold at a loss.

A few months ago, we saw leaked models of controllers (codename Roy) in the SteamVR update. It will use the same SteamOS as the Steam Deck, but adapted for virtual reality. One of the key features is the ability to play flat screen games that are already playable on Steam Deck, but in VR on a big screen without a PC. The first closed-door presentations could start soon,” wrote Gabe Follower.

In September 2023, we heard that a piece of hardware made by Valve, but not yet announced, was certified in South Korea. Prior to that, we heard in late 2022 that Valve had essentially confirmed via Greg Coomer, the company’s product designer, that they were working on a new VR headset, as they believe in the genre and VR games, but hope to stick to the PC platform without developing headset-exclusive titles (e.g. Meta Quest 3). Valve’s latest headset, the Valve Index, was released in June 2019 for €1079. The bundle also included Half-Life: Alyx after its release.

But it’s not official yet… so it’s better to wait and see what Valve does.
