The French studio is also trying to confirm that although they belong to the Chinese giant, they are not involved in the turbulent situation.
William Ding, CEO of NetEase, has withdrawn from several investments in Japan, Europe and North America, so the public was not surprisingly concerned about how this could affect David Cage’s team, Quantic Dream, which was bought two years ago in February 2023 for 100 million euros. In a lengthy LinkedIn post, the Paris-based studio’s CEO and head of publishing, Guillaume de Fondaumière, made it clear that nothing was amiss and that development was still moving forward (this mainly relates to Star Wars: Eclipse, which was announced at The Game Awards 2021… and was supposed to be released in 2026, but rumors suggest it could be delayed).
“We were saddened to learn of the recent layoffs and studio closures affecting some of the NetEase Group’s divisions. Our thoughts are with all those affected and we sincerely hope that they find new opportunities quickly. David Cage and I would like to express our gratitude to the fans and friends who have reached out to us in recent days regarding Quantic Dream. We want to reassure everyone that our studios in Paris and Montréal remain unaffected. We continue to develop our projects at full speed and have several open positions at both locations.
Founded 28 years ago, Quantic Dream remains committed to the strategy David and I outlined in 2019 when NetEase initially acquired a minority stake in our company. Over the past six years, NetEase has been a committed partner, providing us with the creative freedom and financial resources necessary to grow and strive. We became their wholly-owned subsidiary in line with our shared vision for the future. In 2024, we achieved the highest revenue in our history, driven by the exceptional performance of our back catalog titles. In particular, Detroit: Become Human sold 11 million units worldwide on PlayStation and PC last year, a remarkable increase of 2 million units over the previous year, demonstrating the enduring appeal and quality of our titles. The development of our current projects is progressing as planned, and we are fully committed to delivering and launching these innovative, high-quality titles in the future,” de Fondaumière wrote.
Hopefully we’ll get some more information about Star Wars: Eclipse soon…
