Eternal Strands: The Developers Defend the “Slippery” Character!

Brynn’s movement is not as predictably stable, but since the character is physics-based and not animation-based, it is perhaps logical for the developers to defend their decision.

The chaotic physics-based action-RPG has revealed how it will expand in content between now and the summer. There will be updates, tweaks and free DLC. But developer Yellow Brick Games is trying to address some complaints. One thing the studio is sticking to is the movement of the character Brynn. She’s a little slippery, so she can’t stop and react instantly…

“We have heard your feedback about the sometimes ‘slippery’ feel of Brynn’s movements in the game. Some of you have described her walking/running as feeling a little too much like ‘skating’ and that the lack of precision can be frustrating at times. Much of this feeling is intentional and is due to the way a 100% physics-based sandbox game like Eternal Strands is designed to work. Being an object that reacts to the physics around it, just like any other object in the world, means that its weight and inertia will affect its movement. Based on your feedback, we took a closer look at what we could change that would affect the precision of the movement. We have indeed identified and made some subtle but noticeable changes,” Yellow Brick Games wrote.

For example, it may take a while for Brynn to speed up or slow down, and her movement may not be as quick or responsive as in animation-based games. Combat has also been tweaked to be more responsive. Enemy reactions have been improved to provide more momentum, while some abilities now cause even greater reactions that interrupt enemy attacks. The visual effects of player hits have also been refined to make them stand out more. The studio has removed the death penalty for falling, so that players are not penalized for falling for reasons beyond their control.

The changes will be activated sometime in March, and since the reviews of Eternal Strands on Steam have been extremely positive, perhaps this will help boost its momentum a bit.
