Capcom’s latest game is so big that even an ex-Nintendo veteran was humiliated by it!
Monster Hunter Wilds sold more than 8 million copies in three days. According to SteamDB, this makes it the fastest selling game from the Japanese company, with 1,384,608 players at one point. Speaking of Steam, it’s worth mentioning what another game did to Capcom’s masterpiece.
Takaya Imamura was a longtime Nintendo artist. On Friday (the same day as Monster Hunter Wilds), his indie game was released, and it got very little attention. And Imamura was the art director for Star Fox 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, and then the lead designer for F-Zero X! In essence, he created Star Fox or Captain Falcon, as well as many of the more notable characters in both franchises. Now he has released his new game (with a 40% discount), Omega 6: The Triangle Stars, an adventure game… and has collected a total of five user reviews.

Okay, Omega 6 isn’t exactly something you’d expect 100,000 people to play at once, but you’d expect a game from a major developer to get more than five Steam reviews. And they’re not alone: another Japanese developer, STP Works, tweeted that they suddenly couldn’t get a single sale after the release of Monster Hunter Wilds! Granted, their latest game in the Old Coin Pusher Friends IP has been out for about seven months now, so it’s not in the same situation as Omega 6. Japanese players were certainly more interested in Capcom’s game (1.38 million players worldwide at one time, mind you…).
A counter-example could be Repo, a co-op horror game that shows quite good results in Early Access. So not everyone is against Monster Hunter Wilds… but the number of reviews for Omega 6 could be a bit higher.
