PlayStation Joins Forces for the New Resident Evil Movie – Release Date and Details Revealed

PlayStation is now co-producing the upcoming Resident Evil movie, which has just been given an official release date and fresh details. From what we know so far, this new Resident Evil film will be a reboot that brings the franchise back to its survival horror roots, as established in the original game.

Capcom’s Resident Evil franchise has dominated the gaming scene for decades, and its cinematic adaptations have been running for just as long. However, the live-action films, starring Milla Jovovich, leaned heavily into action and sci-fi rather than embracing the chilling horror that defined the games. This departure from the franchise’s original tone has long left fans hoping for a movie that stays true to the spirit of Resident Evil.

The Next Resident Evil Movie

According to Deadline, Sony Pictures has officially confirmed that Zach Cregger, known for directing Barbarian, will helm the new Resident Evil reboot. The film is set to hit theaters on September 18, 2026, and promises to recapture the eerie and suspenseful atmosphere that made the original Capcom game a genre-defining horror experience. The script is being written by Shay Hatten, whose previous work includes John Wick and Ballerina.

Plot details are still under wraps, but all signs suggest this reboot aims to faithfully recreate the survival horror tone of the first Resident Evil games. Sony reportedly turned down offers from other studios, including Warner Bros., in favor of keeping PlayStation Productions involved as a co-producer alongside Constantin Film and Vertigo Entertainment. Cregger has expressed excitement about the project, stating that he’s been a lifelong fan of the franchise.

“I’ve been a fan of these games for decades, and getting the opportunity to bring this incredible title to life is an absolute honor.” Aside from animated projects like Resident Evil: Death Island, Sony Pictures has been behind every major Resident Evil film, including the 2021 adaptation directed by Johannes Roberts. Together, these films have grossed over $1.2 billion worldwide, and all indications suggest the franchise’s cinematic legacy is far from over.
