NINTENDO NEWS – We’ve learned about the Big N’s next hardware from documents filed with the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
Courtesy of the FCC, we’ve learned that the Nintendo Switch 2 will support NFC via the improved Joy-Con controller, similar to its predecessor, which will likely confirm support for Amiibo figures when running the original Switch games and Switch 2 software. Switch 2 users will also be able to charge the console via the bottom USB-C port or the new second USB port (located on the top of the device).
The Verge also spotted a few other things from the submissions. For example, it’s a safe bet that the Japanese company’s next-generation hardware will support Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) networks (with bandwidths up to 80MHz), as opposed to the original Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac). The FCC filings also reveal that the new hardware from the big N is rated for up to 15V AC, which is the same as the original Switch, but there’s also mention of an AC adapter up to 20V, so it’s unclear if the Switch 2 will have faster charging speeds or more power when docked.
A previous leak claimed that the Switch 2’s dock requires a much more powerful power adapter than its predecessor, suggesting that it may have more power when docked. Incidentally, Nintendo unveiled the Switch 2 in January with a teaser video showing off the console and Joy-Cons, and the trailer also featured a new Mario Kart game. The Nintendo Direct is scheduled for April 2, where we’ll learn more about the console (release date, price, launch titles – those would be the highlights).
Big N CEO Shuntaro Furukawa said in March that the pricing of Nintendo Switch 2 will take into account a number of factors, including affordability, which is the company’s trademark. He also said that Nintendo will take measures to prevent resellers and scalpers from significantly influencing the initial inventory of the Switch 2.
Let’s hope so.
