A Fallout-themed mod with multiple endings? A pet dog helper (similar to Dogmeat)? Well, yes!
There are a lot of Doom WADs out there, but Vault 666 might just surprise you. Carl Asami made this mod, and he mixed DOOM II with Fallout almost perfectly. What if Doom Guy had to save the dark world? It’s a silly, parodic thing, but the attention to detail and love for the source material really shows. WAD opens with a parody of Fallout’s dark opening, performed by a surprisingly good stand-in for the series’ longtime narrator, Ron Perlman (named Henry Schultz). His natural delivery has some real variety. He doesn’t follow Ron Perlman’s style 100%, as he sometimes slips out of character, but that’s a good thing.
In Vault 666, we have the option to turn around and walk away at the very beginning, which gives us a disastrously bad narrated ending. Even if we play the WAD normally, it has more endings. This takes into account whether Dogmeat survived and whether we found certain track secrets. Speaking of Dogmeat, it definitely brings it up to the level of Arcanum: Steamworks and Magick Obscura. It helps a lot, but it doesn’t overdo it.
Vault 666 also nails the 2D Fallout aesthetic. The sound effects and assets are taken directly from the game, with great emulation. WAD even reworked id Software’s arsenal for the game to more closely resemble the weapon set from the first Fallout. Doom Guy’s 9mm Berretta has been replaced with a boxy Fallout 10mm. Incidentally, the mod is populated with the usual Doom enemies… with one exception. Fallout 1’s super mutant bossa, The Master, makes an appearance and taunts through the Vault’s speakers.
You can find the mod on ModDB. It’s always nice to see mods that respect the source material, and while Vault 666 has a slightly parodic feel to it, it doesn’t cross the line. And that’s a good thing.
