MOVIE NEWS – “We looked at everything.” The creators of WoW and Diablo aren’t ruling out more films because “we’re Blizzard Entertainment, not just Blizzard Games”. However, the company knows it must be “thoughtful and responsible” with its franchises.
Blizzard has built a gaming empire with franchises like World of Warcraft, Diablo, and Overwatch. Naturally, the company has sought ways to expand its storytelling beyond gaming, leading to the release of the Warcraft movie in 2016. At the time, it became the highest-grossing video game adaptation ever—though it has since been overtaken by Detective Pikachu and Super Mario Bros. The Movie. So, could Blizzard be planning more cinematic ventures? While nothing is confirmed, the company is keeping its options open.
Johanna Faries, president of Blizzard Entertainment, touched on this subject in an interview with Windows Central. Many fans would love to see their favorite Blizzard franchises brought to life on the big screen, but the company knows it can’t just approve any project. “The short answer is that we look at everything. I say this with full intent—and while I can’t share anything specific today—we literally discussed it again yesterday. We have a strong collective belief that we are Blizzard Entertainment, not just Blizzard Games or Blizzard Gaming.”
“Our universes, our iconic IPs, can branch off in many dynamic and exciting directions,” Faries continues. “We have to be thoughtful and responsible with those franchises, right? Not everything will fit, and execution matters. We’re thinking about how we can expand into entertainment in the broadest way possible, ensuring that Blizzard remains a beacon of magic and joy.”
“Blizzard’s foundation is world-class game development, but some people come to BlizzCon and have life-changing experiences,” Faries adds. “They meet their life partner. Some stay to watch the old Warcraft movie. That’s part of what it means to be embedded in the culture and continue shaping it. So, absolutely, that’s the lens we look through.”
Blizzard has also been making headlines for another reason: confirming that BlizzCon 2025 won’t be happening. According to the company’s official statement, the convention will return in 2026 with even bigger and better events, blending fan-favorite activities with brand-new experiences. Players who want to attend can already reserve their tickets for the event, scheduled for September 12–13, 2026.
