Sony Quietly Brings PlayStation Classics to PS Portal via Cloud Streaming—But There’s a Catch!

Sony hasn’t made a big announcement about it, but classic PlayStation games are now available via cloud streaming on the PlayStation Portal. This exciting feature is still in beta testing and exclusively accessible to PS Plus Premium subscribers.

PlayStation Portal’s release more than a year ago initially drew skepticism due to its perceived limitations, yet the handheld device ultimately exceeded all expectations, becoming a commercial hit for Sony. The company has consistently delivered significant updates, progressively transforming the Portal experience. The latest improvement—a beta version of cloud streaming—offers PS Plus Premium subscribers, who hold Sony’s highest-tier subscription, the chance to dive into PlayStation’s classic titles.

Initially, this cloud streaming option offered access to around 120 titles, but Sony has steadily expanded its catalog over time. According to a recent report by True Trophies, the streaming library now features not only modern games but also iconic classics from the PSP and original PlayStation era. Gamers interested in exploring this beta functionality can find step-by-step instructions on PlayStation’s official support website.

Currently, this beta program isn’t globally available; access is limited to just 30 countries, including major markets like Spain. However, lucky participants can already enjoy streaming classic hits such as Ape Escape, Tekken, and The Legend of Dragoon, without having to power up their PS5 consoles. Sony plans to further expand this streaming library in the upcoming weeks, adding even more classic games alongside recent titles. Indeed, PS Plus Extra has recently confirmed 12 new free games arriving in March 2025, including beloved Armored Core installments.

PS5 Rental Program Sees High Demand in Japan and UK

In another interesting move, Sony recently announced a PS5 console rental service, allowing gamers to experience exclusives like Monster Hunter Wilds without purchasing the hardware outright. Currently limited to the UK and Japan, this service has already proven incredibly popular, with all available consoles in Japan booked through mid-April. While it’s uncertain if Sony will extend the rental program to additional countries, its initial success suggests potential future expansion.
