Mortal Kombat 2: First Images Released – Johnny Cage Gets a Fresh Take with Karl Urban

MOVIE NEWS – The Johnny Cage in the new Mortal Kombat movie will be different from what you remember from the video games, but Ed Boon believes Karl Urban has done a fantastic job. Mortal Kombat 2 reveals its first images and is set to premiere this fall with a bigger and bolder story than its predecessor.

In just a few days, it will be four years since the release of the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie, a film that didn’t exactly dominate the box office but found massive success on Max, leading to a sequel. This time, Johnny Cage takes center stage, along with the high-stakes tournament fans have been waiting for.

Karl Urban Brings a New Take on Johnny Cage

If you watched the first movie, you’ll recall that it ended with Cole Young (Lewis Tan) heading to Los Angeles to recruit Johnny Cage (Karl Urban). However, this version of Cage is a little different from what die-hard fans are used to. But according to series co-creator Ed Boon, that’s not a bad thing at all: “You’ll finally see Johnny Cage on screen. His role in the story and the Mortal Kombat universe is vital. (…) Karl [Urban] brings his own spin to the character, and while it’s different from the games in some ways, I think fans will find it refreshing.”

Boon assures audiences that Cage’s signature humor will be present, but director Simon McQuoid emphasizes that they didn’t want to turn him into a shallow comic relief character: “Having Karl Urban play him allowed us to give the character more depth.” It’s time to trust the process.

This Time, We’re Getting a Real Mortal Kombat Tournament

One of the biggest complaints about the first Mortal Kombat movie was that… well, there wasn’t actually a Mortal Kombat tournament. Instead of focusing on the traditional martial arts showdown from NetherRealm Studios’ games, the film opted for a series of scattered battles. This time, however, the tournament will take center stage and is said to feature plenty of twists.

The showdown between Scorpion and Sub-Zero will also get several minutes of screen time, though it won’t be the main focus. According to the director, Mortal Kombat 2 will be a bigger, bolder experience compared to the 2021 film. For now, that’s all we know, but the first trailer is expected to drop in the coming days. The official release date for Mortal Kombat 2 is set for October 24.
