Assassin’s Creed Shadows: Excellent on PlayStation 5 Pro! [VIDEO]

This might be one of the best games to ever update Sony’s half-generation console, so Ubisoft has done a great job…

The PlayStation 5 Pro update of Assassin’s Creed Shadows is one of the best we’ve seen so far, as Digital Foundry’s analysis embedded below is decidedly positive about the story set in feudal Japan. The experience of playing Assassin’s Creed Shadows on the PlayStation 5 Pro is elevated over the base model by the fact that Performance Mode takes advantage of the more powerful hardware’s capabilities, delivering a gameplay experience that’s capable of 60 frames per second, but in some cases the frame rate drops.

Ray Traced Global Illumination (RTGI) is also something that has been observed (and is becoming more common; see the case of Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced). RTGI makes a big difference even when playing on the base PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro with similar image quality and internal resolution. In favor of the PS5 Pro, there is a minimal advantage in resolution and graphics settings. In performance mode, there’s RTGI, and on the PlayStation 5 Pro it shows a significant improvement thanks to additional beam-tracking improvements. Interestingly, Ubisoft’s game doesn’t seem to use the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaler, as it shows artifacts that are more noticeable in analytical upscaling than in a machine learning solution.

So it’s fair to say that the PlayStation 5 Pro has another great game, as it’s not always the case that developers have been able to take full advantage of the power of Sony’s more powerful console. It’s surprising to see something like this from Ubisoft, an outsourced third-party publisher, but with the game being delayed several times (it was originally due out in November), the French publisher has had time to learn what they can show off with the PlayStation 5 Pro.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is out today for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC. Ubisoft’s future may depend on the success of this game.
