Until Dawn: See What It Looked Like on PlayStation 3! [VIDEO]

Yes, the game was originally designed for PS3, and since Supermassive Games’ prototype got a full playthrough, we can take a closer look at the concept of the previous generation…

A full playthrough of the PlayStation 3 version of Until Dawn is also available from a first-person perspective but can be seen in the video embedded below. Supermassive Games originally planned the game to be a PS3 exclusive, using the PlayStation Move controllers. The gameplay here also alternates between members of the group, so it’s not different in that regard from what was eventually released for PlayStation 4 in August 2015.

The YouTube channel Digital Preservation has posted a playthrough, which shows that it was made from a prototype in development, as there are some temporary (placeholder) sounds here and there, and some of the visuals look a bit unusual. Some of the characters may also be familiar from the PS4 “final” version. Sound effects, music, locations, and story elements are also similar to the PlayStation 4 version in many ways.

Let’s not forget that there was also a remake of Until Dawn, but it wasn’t made by Supermassive Games, it was made by Ballistic Moon, which was rumored to be essentially closed in early March, and there were about a handful of people left in the studio… but all the developers were laid off (the ones left aren’t developers), so the situation really seems pretty hopeless. UK-based Ballistic Moon confirmed the round of layoffs last year, saying it had made the difficult decision to significantly downsize the team in order to secure the studio’s future… but despite this, the cuts continued at the end of the year. So the remake was not a blockbuster.

Going back to the prototype, it could be derisively called Before Dawn, since it’s not the finished, completed version of the game, which might have benefited from the generational change, as we were quite complimentary about Until Dawn ten years ago. In any case, it’s good to see prototypes of the games, as these shots are often worth their weight in gold, as they show significant differences compared to the retail versions.
