Chainsaws and Space Drama: Harrison Ford Nearly Took Down the Millennium Falcon (Twice)

MOVIE NEWS – Harrison Ford once got so angry during the filming of Star Wars that he nearly tore the Millennium Falcon apart with a chainsaw. Galactic karma? The actor’s relationship with the iconic ship is far more turbulent than Han Solo’s ever was.

“Traveling through hyperspace ain’t like dusting crops, boy.” That line from the original Star Wars film could not have been more prophetic. Not only did Han Solo have his fair share of ship-related woes, but so did Harrison Ford himself – to a near-fatal extent. The most infamous incident, however, didn’t involve a dramatic battle or a special effects mishap. It began with Ford losing his temper… and grabbing a saw.

Ford vs. the Falcon: The Chainsaw Episode

The scene was set in the 1970s. Production on the Original Trilogy was in full swing, and tensions ran high. Harrison Ford, already known for his uncompromising attitude, had apparently reached his breaking point during a shoot inside the full-scale Millennium Falcon set. As Mark Hamill recounted to Empire magazine, Ford stormed off set, grabbed a saw, and began cutting into the wooden structure of the ship. “It was made of wood, and he just started sawing through it,” Hamill recalled, painting a surreal picture of one of the most chaotic behind-the-scenes moments in Star Wars history.

What made matters worse was that no one on set knew how to calm him down. The situation escalated quickly – until Hamill stepped in. Relying on his wit, he cracked a joke that defused the tension: “If you ever play a flawed character, you’ll win an Oscar.” Ford reportedly paused, chuckled, and walked away from the partially destroyed set. Thanks to Hamill’s well-timed humor, the crisis was averted, and a potential production disaster was reduced to a bizarre anecdote. Still, it’s no surprise George Lucas aged a decade during those early films.

The Force Awakens… and So Does Industrial-Grade Danger

Fast forward to 2014. On the set of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Ford once again found himself in a dangerous situation aboard the Millennium Falcon – only this time, it wasn’t his temper to blame, but rather modern technology. While filming at Pinewood Studios, a heavy hydraulic door malfunctioned and came crashing down on him. The force of the impact was reportedly equivalent to being hit by a small car. Ford suffered a broken leg and had to be airlifted to the hospital for emergency surgery.

The incident prompted a safety investigation, and it was revealed that the production company, Foodles Production, had failed to follow proper safety protocols. The door had been activated without notifying the actor or ensuring the area was clear. As a result, Pinewood Studios was fined £1.6 million. Ford later remarked on the stark difference between old-school sets and modern-day production tech: “Back then, doors were manual. Now they try to kill you.”

Despite chainsaws and collapsing spaceship parts, Ford never truly left the role of Han Solo behind. He remains one of the franchise’s most iconic figures – not just because of his performances, but because of stories like these. And if you’re feeling nostalgic, all the Star Wars films and shows are currently streaming on Disney+.
