Age of Rime is a bit tricky because the new content was not included in the 1993 original, but in a later remake.
This major update, which includes the addition of Rime, is free to existing owners of Cyan’s 2020 remake of Myst for Quest and the 2021 Windows, Mac, and Xbox versions. Age of Rime introduces players to the snowy, mountainous seascape that Atrus and his family visited in years past, before the events of Myst and Riven turned their lives upside down. Sweeping vistas, beautiful ice structures, and fantastic natural phenomena await new visitors. This stunning new age also houses a detailed laboratory space where bold experiments have been conducted, delving into the mysterious nature of Linking Books themselves. This new version of Rime includes all-new story beats, new lore, and new sights to behold.
They added Rime, with all-new narrative beats, lore, and visuals. They also added the ability to zoom in on things. On the PC, they added support for Intel XeSS and TSR (Windows only) supersampling. Added a Color Context Subtitles option to the Interface Settings menu. This will display text next to puzzles that require seeing certain colors to find a solution. Major graphical improvements have been made to the Myst Island Quest and other areas of the game. ASW has been enabled to accommodate this.
So what is Rime? It’s not from the original 1993 Myst, it’s from the 2000 realMyst. It converted the pre-rendered images of the game into real-time, full 3D. It’s more of a bonus area than an add-on, and adds more context to the Myst story when you complete it. Cyan added it to the remake because the fans asked them to, and they listened. We can still use DLSS 4.
So that’s a fair update for PC, Mac and Meta Quest on March 20th; the Xbox Series/Xbox One update will come a little later.
