MOVIE NEWS – Production has begun in Riga on “The Wizard of the Kremlin,” with Jude Law taking on the role of a young Vladimir Putin. The first image of the British actor in character on set has now been released.

Filming is underway in Riga for the latest project by French director Olivier Assayas, titled The Wizard of the Kremlin. In this political drama, Jude Law plays the part of Russia’s future president. The first image from the shoot has surfaced online, according to UNN, citing Russian media sources.

The film’s development was first reported in May 2024. The screenplay was co-written by Assayas and acclaimed author Emmanuel Carrère. Alongside Law, the cast features Tom Sturridge (UK), Paul Dano and Zach Galifianakis (USA), and Alicia Vikander (Sweden).

Back in January, Jude Law—known for roles in Sherlock Holmes (as Dr. Watson), The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Holiday, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, Rise of the Guardians, and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus—confirmed he would portray Putin during the early stages of his political rise. The actor admitted the role posed a serious challenge.

“I haven’t really started working on the role yet. I mean, technically I have, but it feels like I’m standing at the base of Everest, looking up and thinking, ‘Oh God, what did I get myself into?’” Law shared in an interview with Deadline.

Putin-Inspired Styling for Jude Law’s First Appearance

The first on-set photos show Jude Law wearing a formal suit and black overcoat—clothing often associated with Vladimir Putin. Makeup artists aimed to replicate the politician’s signature look, capturing details such as his expression and hairstyle. He appears alongside actors portraying diplomats and international leaders.

Earlier reports from UNN noted that The Wizard of the Kremlin is adapted from the novel of the same name by Giuliano da Empoli. Set in the 1990s, the film follows Vadim Baranov, a television producer who becomes a political advisor and gradually consolidates massive influence. The character is said to be based on Vladislav Surkov, a former aide to the Russian president.

According to Harpers Bazaar, Jude Law remains one of Hollywood’s most dynamic performers. He continues to reinvent himself across genres—from auteur cinema to sweeping historical dramas and fantasy adaptations based on J.K. Rowling’s works. He’s also recognized for his bold performances in Paolo Sorrentino’s satirical series The Young Pope and The New Pope, which offered a provocative take on the Catholic Church and its complexities.

Over more than three decades, Jude Law has collaborated with a range of visionary filmmakers, including Martin Scorsese, Wes Anderson, and Wong Kar-wai, bringing an array of compelling characters to life on screen.
