Obsidian Entertainment dives into the Pillars of Eternity fray as the franchise celebrates its 10th anniversary…
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of old-school isometric RPG Pillars of Eternity, Obsidian has released a big new patch and even bigger news: a full decade later, turn-based combat is coming to the game. And if not for Pillars of Eternity, Avowed, the studio’s latest game, would not have been born, recently released for Xbox Series and PC. Obsidian Entertainment has announced a new update for Pillars of Eternity on its forums:
“Coming later this year, observers will be able to help us test a brand new feature: Turn-based combat. We’re excited to explore this new way to experience encounters in Pillars of Eternity, and your feedback will help shape its future. More details on how to participate will be announced in the near future, so keep an eye on our social networks and our Discord,” Obsidian announced on its forums.
Baldur’s Gate parts one and two featured real-time, pausable combat. These games are still some of the best RPGs ever made (and yes, Baldur’s Gate 3 could live up to them). This development may be a bit divisive for the game, but you’ll be able to choose which side you’re on. Anyway, this isn’t the first time that Obsidian Entertainment has added turn-based combat to Pillars of Eternity after the fact, in fact, Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire didn’t have to wait ten years to show up in the game (that was back in 2019).
While the update that brings turn-based combat won’t be coming anytime soon, Pillars of Eternity recently received a pretty hefty update that fixed a lot of bugs and tweaked a few other things. So Obsidian isn’t just busy with Avowed!
