CD Projekt RED executives recall the studio’s early years, highlighting the company’s significant growth over time.
CD Projekt RED has become one of the most influential companies in the video game industry. While the troubled launch of Cyberpunk 2077 led many players to lose confidence in their products, anticipation is now building for the release of The Witcher 4. Reflecting on their journey, the studio’s leaders remember that two decades ago, the situation was vastly different from today.
Michał Nowakowski and Adam Badowski, both deputy CEOs at CD Projekt, discussed this era in an interview with XYZ (via GamesRadar+). Nowakowski noted that “nostalgia is treacherous – it paints everything in rosy colors.” He emphasized that “many things were simpler at the company. We were incomparably smaller, everyone knew each other by name, and we often had close, personal relationships.”
Badowski added: “Recently, I’ve reevaluated my romantic approach to the past. We only remember the good things, but we couldn’t do projects as big as we do today. We often slept under desks and lived in chaos. The feeling of being an underdog was highly motivating. Today, we have greater opportunities to conquer the world.”
Badowski further explained: “The industry has become extremely professionalized over the last twelve years or so, and as a result, newcomers’ skills are significantly better now than before. Despite the fact that, with the organization’s growth, we are becoming more and more like a corporation, and some processes are becoming more complicated, we have gained the ‘muscle’ with which we can create truly large and unique games. Few companies can boast something similar.”
The Witcher 4: A Distant Release
CD Projekt RED now comprises hundreds of professionals, with teams primarily focused on developing the upcoming The Witcher 4. However, this doesn’t mean that the RPG featuring Ciri will be released soon, as the company’s latest financial reports indicate that its launch isn’t expected in 2025 or 2026. Therefore, we must be patient and continue dreaming of the day we can return to this fantasy world.
