Path of Exile 2: It May Remain in Early Access Longer than Expected!

It’s not so certain that Grinding Gear Games’ game will leave its early access concept behind in 2025!

Path of Exile 2 launched in December, but it is not yet known exactly when the game will end this period. On Steam, the developers say that it will be in early access for at least six months. Three of those months have already passed, and the game may not be in early access for only six months. The game’s director, Jonathan Rogers, told PCGamer that the studio wants to finish the early access period this year, but they may need a little more time.

Rogers said he would like to introduce a new character class with each update. The April 4 Dawn of the Hunt update, Path of Exile 2’s biggest update to date, was incredibly stressful for the studio because they absolutely needed the Huntress, which is why they were only able to announce the update’s release date at the last minute. Previously, in the months leading up to the release of Path of Exile 2, the studio had enlisted the help of the developers of the first game to help polish the new game. This meant that they had to delay the planned PoE1 expansion…

“In terms of overall time, I think we’re still pretty much on track. Initially, before we kind of hit the crunch, we were kind of saying six months in Early Access, which in retrospect was not going to happen. My current feeling is kind of a year of early access. Like, I want to get it done this year, but we’ll see how things go. I mean, maybe it’ll take a little more time, but I hope so. I still really want to get the game out and fully released in 2025, so yeah, that’s the goal. We’ll see how it goes though. This is kind of an inside baseball, production kind of issue, but it was just kind of a pain in the ass.

While I would love to have a class in every new league that we do, I just don’t want to promise it anymore because it just led to a situation where there was a lot of production uncertainty and we couldn’t promise dates to anyone. How could we even think about doing a Path of Exile expansion when we still have hundreds of thousands of people having bad experiences with Path of Exile 2? There are crashes, there are serious balance issues in the endgame, how could I justify taking some of the most experienced developers we have off Path of Exile 2 when it’s on fire?”, Rogers said.

So the six months could be twelve or more.
