Mario Kart on Nintendo Switch 2 Could Be a Huge Mistake—Former Nintendo Employees Explain Why!

The Nintendo Switch 2 reveal is just two days away, promising detailed technical insights into the next-gen console. Fans are buzzing, particularly after January’s teaser trailer hinted at a brand-new Mario Kart game.

The trailer excited fans by suggesting a new installment of the iconic racing series as one of the Switch 2’s potential launch titles. However, former Nintendo employees believe this might be an “unusual” move by the Japanese gaming giant.

Kit Ellis and Krysta Yang, former PR managers at Nintendo, discussed this situation in a YouTube video (via GamesIndustry). Ellis highlighted that while fans understandably expect Mario Kart as a successful launch title, the current situation surrounding Mario Kart 8 Deluxe might complicate this choice. “Mario Kart is incredibly successful and a proven console-seller,” Ellis notes, “but its current popularity means the transition might not be as straightforward as fans expect.”

Why Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Players Might Resist the Switch 2 Upgrade

Yang compares this situation to Nintendo’s groundbreaking 2017 Switch launch, which featured a revolutionary hybrid design and an innovative game, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. “Launching a new console with a Mario Kart sequel isn’t typically Nintendo,” Yang states. “Usually, they present something groundbreaking and genre-defining, like Breath of the Wild, to drive excitement and sales.”

She suggests the massive popularity of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, selling over 67 million copies, creates a challenge for Nintendo. “How can Nintendo convince players that the new Mario Kart justifies upgrading to Switch 2?” Yang asks. “Do fans really need the new hardware to enjoy Mario Kart again?”

Ellis adds a humorous perspective, imagining parents hesitant to buy the new version: “Parents might look at the new Mario Kart and say, ‘We already have Mario Kart at home.’ This mindset could present a real hurdle for Nintendo.” Nevertheless, he emphasizes the game itself will undoubtedly be excellent, but stresses that Nintendo’s challenge is always to surpass their previous successes.

Fans won’t have long to wait for answers: the dedicated Nintendo Direct broadcast is scheduled for April 2 at 3:00 PM (CET). Alongside console specifics, it’s highly likely Nintendo will showcase more of the new Mario Kart game during the event.
