Over 1,000 Hours Into Baldur’s Gate 3, a Player Finally Discovers What This Simple Item Actually Does

After 1,157 hours of gameplay, one dedicated Baldur’s Gate 3 player uncovered that a seemingly useless item actually plays a key role in Larian Studios’ RPG. It turns out that some of the most mundane-looking objects can have hidden depth in this fantasy epic.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Baldur’s Gate 3 is its ability to keep surprising players, no matter how long they’ve been playing. In a recent discovery that caught the attention of the game’s community, a veteran player with over 1,157 hours logged finally realized that an unassuming item—the humble bar of soap—serves a surprising function: keeping characters clean. While many items in the game serve no purpose beyond decoration, soap turns out to be far from just cosmetic fluff.

“1,157.9 hours into this game and I JUST LEARNED that if you find a bar of soap, you can click ‘use’ and it will clean your character. Not gonna lie. Makes everything better,” wrote one Reddit user. Based on the reactions, this wasn’t widely known. “I wish I’d known this before my sex scene,” said another fan. One user even joked about discovering it too late, saying “Would’ve helped when I was still in clown makeup.”

Soap doesn’t just remove blood and dirt—it also eliminates bad smells that characters might pick up during battle. And while that may sound like a purely visual detail, cleanliness can actually offer a charisma boost in the world of Dungeons & Dragons. Of course, seasoned players know there are other ways to freshen up—like using a water spell (which consumes an action) or jumping into a river. But nothing beats the convenience of pulling out a bar of soap and using it on the spot. For many, this overlooked mechanic has come as a genuine surprise.

Sponges, surprisingly enough, serve the same role and have the added bonus of being inexhaustible—they never run out, no matter how many times you use them. While this feature has always been in the game, it’s fascinating that nearly two years after release, there are still players who are just now finding out about it.

Will there be a Baldur’s Gate 4?

After the critical and commercial success of Baldur’s Gate 3, it was revealed a few months ago that Hasbro had greenlit a new Dungeons & Dragons game. At the same time, Larian Studios is hard at work on two upcoming RPGs, although no details have been shared yet. However, a direct sequel—Baldur’s Gate 4—won’t be among them. Larian confirmed that it has officially canceled both a fourth entry and a planned expansion for the third. It’s worth remembering that the studio is also behind the highly acclaimed Divinity: Original Sin series, so it’s likely that at least one of their next projects will return to that universe.
