She Walked Away from Marvel – and Never Watched the Avengers Film She Was In

“We’re not going to pay you anymore.” That was Marvel’s response to The White Lotus star Carrie Coon when she asked for a raise. The actress declined to return for Endgame and hasn’t even seen Infinity War, where she briefly appeared.

While Carrie Coon is widely recognized for her performances in the last two Ghostbusters films and standout roles in acclaimed HBO series like The Leftovers and the currently airing third season of The White Lotus, few know she also played a small but notable role in Avengers: Infinity War. Cast as Proxima Midnight, she was part of the villainous Black Order – yet she declined to reprise the role in Endgame.

In 2018’s blockbuster hit, Coon’s character was involved in several combat scenes and had a handful of lines. However, in the sequel, her presence was reduced to a fleeting glimpse during the climactic battle. According to her husband, actor-playwright Tracy Letts, Marvel may have been planning a larger role but dropped the idea after contract negotiations fell through.

“Marvel contacted her about returning for the sequel,” Letts said in an interview reported by People. “She replied, ‘Well, if the first film is the highest-grossing of all time, are you going to increase my pay?’ And they told her, ‘No. We’re not paying you more.’ She declined, and they said she should feel lucky to be part of the franchise.”

Letts also noted that neither he nor Coon have watched Infinity War or Endgame, though they never made a fuss about it. For most viewers, Proxima’s absence likely went unnoticed – after all, the character had already been defeated in the first movie, and a second onscreen death might have seemed redundant or confusing, like a time-travel echo. Marvel’s original plans for her, however, remain unclear.

Aside from voicing Proxima Midnight, Coon also contributed to the film’s motion capture performances – a task she praised in an earlier interview with Entertainment Weekly. Avengers: Infinity War is currently streaming on Disney+, and The White Lotus is available on Max.
