TECH NEWS – Asus’ ROG Astral cards are top of the line, and now we’re hearing that one of them has received a BIOS update to make it more powerful.
Asus has released a new BIOS update for its GeForce RTX 5080 ROG Astral model, which has apparently bumped the TGP to 450W. The company also seems to know that their ROG Astral cards have a much higher potential, and the new BIOS update is designed to do just that. The 450W consumption is a lot in itself, but compared to that, the RTX 5090 is 575W, but the point now is not about that, but about the RTX 5080: 50W increase in consumption.
It should be added that the ROG Astral card already had a higher TDP than the base GeForce RTX 5080 models, but with the higher power consumption (which could power a complete PC on its own), the performance has been taken to another level. This new BIOS was released relatively recently, on March 14th, and it only mentions that the TGP rating has been changed. Asus hasn’t officially mentioned why the power consumption has increased, but since they are positioning the ROG Astral card as a top-of-the-line model, they want to squeeze as much extra performance out of it as possible by raising the limits.
Asus is not alone with the 450W consumption, as Gigabyte’s GeForce RTX 5080 Gaming also has a 450W TGP, but this model is not considered a high-end version. The ROG Astral GeForce RTX 5080 will now have higher power limits, but there will not be such an improvement in performance: despite the 12.5% increase in power consumption, performance will only increase by 2-5%, so Asus’ move is not logical in this respect. Moreover, who knows how much more heat and noise the company’s card will generate with the higher power consumption.
Nevertheless, it’s exciting to see Asus competing for high-end versions of GPUs, as there aren’t many of them left.
