TECH NEWS – Donald Trump has extended the availability of Chinese social platform ByteDance in the US for 75 days.
The operation of TikTok in the U.S. has been controversial for some time, as the government has continued to push to ban the app, but now users and ByteDance are looking for a less extreme alternative. In the past, the temporary ban on social media platforms has caused quite an outcry, with Trump talking about a less severe solution. The company’s fate in the US remains up in the air, as the president has just signed another executive order that would allow TikTok to continue operating in the country for another 75 days.
Although TikTok was officially banned from operating in the US on January 19, 2025, Trump ordered the ban to be delayed for 75 days following the controversial decision, giving enough time to decide on the company’s future. It was also extended to potentially give TikTok time to find a US-based company with which to negotiate a sale. Although the grace period expires tomorrow, it appears that TikTok has been given an additional two and a half months to complete the deal.
According to Trump, incredible progress has been made in closing the deal to secure TikTok’s future in the country. Several large companies (Oracle, Amazon, Perplexity) have reportedly already made offers. Others have also had their eyes on TikTok, including YouTube’s MrBeast and Kevin O’Leary from Shark Tank. However, ByteDance has shown no interest in selling TikTok. China has yet to approve any potential deal. One way for Trump to handle the situation is to push the negotiations more aggressively by imposing tariffs.
Another possible solution would be to involve more U.S. investors in acquiring partial ownership of TikTok. Given that ByteDance is not transferring full ownership, but rather the licensing of the TikTok algorithm, it remains to be seen whether such a solution would comply with current legislation…
