Minecraft Movie Breaks Records Worldwide – Hollywood’s Biggest Premiere This Year

MOVIE NEWS – Minecraft: The Movie is crushing it at the global box office, pulling in numbers no other Hollywood film has matched in 2024. Once again, video games are taking center stage in cinema.

It’s official: Hollywood has another video game hit on its hands. After counting Friday and Saturday’s global earnings, Minecraft: The Movie is expected to close out its debut weekend with over $260 million in ticket sales — already setting records in several countries.

In Poland, for example, the film pulled in $1.5 million on Friday alone, putting it on track to beat out the biggest opening weekends in the country’s box office history, even surpassing titles like Avatar and Avengers: Endgame. In markets like China, Spain, and the United Kingdom, it’s already become the highest-grossing Hollywood premiere of the year. In short: this movie is a juggernaut.

Could This Be the Start of a New Franchise?

We’ll need a few more days and weeks to fully understand the impact, but with $260 million earned against a $150 million budget, Warner Bros. and Legendary may have just kicked off the next big movie franchise.

That said, critical reception has been mixed. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a modest 49% approval score, while audiences on IMDb rate it at 6.1 out of 10. The team at 3DJuegos promises to publish its review in the coming hours.

Based on the iconic sandbox video game by Mojang (now owned by Microsoft), Minecraft: The Movie follows four quirky outsiders who are sucked into a magical blocky universe ruled by imagination. There, they embark on a whimsical adventure with the help of a legendary builder named Steve. The film stars Jack Black and Jason Momoa.
