The Last of Us Creator Confirms Season 3: “Viewers Don’t Need to Worry”

MOVIE NEWS – The Last of Us returns with Season 2 on Saturday, April 13 at 3 a.m. on Max, and fans can rest easy: Season 3 has already been greenlit. The series is expected to run for four seasons in total.

“The audience doesn’t have to worry,” said Craig Mazin, showrunner of The Last of Us, who is already planning for Season 3—even if he hasn’t started writing yet. With the second season launching April 13 on Max, the creators are already teasing what’s next for Ellie and Joel’s bleak journey.

HBO locks in Season 3

Although HBO officially renewed The Last of Us for a third season just a few days ago, Mazin revealed in an interview with GamesRadar that he hasn’t begun scripting the new episodes. He joked that he’s still recovering from the intense post-production of Season 2. “I’m a little tired,” he admitted.

“I’ve been working seven days a week for months, and I still have a few visual effects left to approve for the final episode. So technically, I’m not even done with Season 2,” Mazin explained. He plans to take a short break before diving into the writing for Season 3. “We’re really happy with how the critics have responded. Thank God it turned out well.”

He also reassured fans about the future of the show: “The fact that HBO renewed us shows a huge amount of trust, and it means fans don’t have to fear cancellation. They can enjoy Season 2 knowing Season 3 is on the way.” He added: “I’ll take a few weeks off, and then—if there’s one thing I know about myself—it’s that I’ll want to start writing again.”

According to an official press statement, The Last of Us is planned as a four-season series. Season 3 is being described as “just as powerful and extraordinary” as the ones before.
